The story changes gears and the reader meets Madame Devalier, Priscilla's stepmother, who is a perfumer. Beets are periodically delivered to her apartment from an unknown sender, and Priscilla has no idea why she receives them. Priscilla has a brief lesbian relationship with her coworker Ricki and goes on to have an affair with an older man obsessed with eternal life named Wiggs Dannyboy. She is an amateur perfumer, and she works tirelessly to find the base note to complete a fragrance she has from an antique perfume bottle in her possession. The story then switches to the next main character and the reader meets Priscilla, an extremely intelligent waitress working at a Mexican restaurant in Seattle.
Alobar and Kudra move from place to place and live together for thousands of years. Air represents the controlled breathing, water the ritual bathing, earth the simple diet, and fire the desire and sex between two partners. Together they come across a group of Bandaloop Doctors and discover the secrets to immortality: the elements of air, water, earth, and fire. Alobar meets a woman in India, Kudra, that later becomes his wife. along his journey he meets the Greek god Pan ( ), who is losing his powers due to mass conversion to Christianity.
